Environmental Management Services

Environmental Management Overview

The Overberg District Municipality will be guided in its activities by the following vision for the environment in the years ahead: - To ensure a positive relationship between all spheres of government as well as civil society in order to promote a safe and healthy environment. - To ensure that environmental management and the principle of sustainability enjoys high priority in all planning documents within the Municipality. - Strive to ensure that environmental quality will be improved in terms of air, water, land and sea.

Environmental Management is governed by the Constitution of 1996, the National Environmental Management Act of 1998.  Accordingly, the Overberg District Municipality is responsible for:

  • Coastal management and monitoring. This includes drafting the Coastal Management Programme, convening the Municipal Coastal Committee and monthly inspections along the coast;
  • Biodiversity conservation by means of commenting on development applications; 
  • Solid waste management. Development of the Integrated Waste Management Plan. The ODM convene the Regional Waste Forum to promote cooperation between Municipalities within the Overberg region with regard to solid waste initiatives;
  • Regional Geographic Information System (GIS) database. This GIS information will be used in the context of spatial planning, environmental- and coastal management/monitoring and development application evaluation; and
