The voluntary scheme has been developed by the Overberg District Municipality: Municipal Health Services Department, to provide consumers with information pertaining to the Food & Hygiene Safety of restaurants, in order to help them to make an informed decision on where to eat. The Star Rating Level can be used by restaurant owners as a marketing tool.
WHO CAN PARTAKE IN THE SCHEME?
The voluntary scheme applies to restaurants in possession of a Certificate of Acceptability (COA) issued by the Overberg District Municipality. All owners of restaurants, who interested to market their establishment/s, are welcome to apply.
HOW ARE RATINGS CALCULATED?
The rating of the restaurant is calculated using the results of routine food premises inspections undertaken by our Environmental Health Practitioners (EHPs). On completion of the inspection, the EHP will provide a score that translates into a star rating.
STAR RATING SYSTEM
Restaurants that achieve a high level of compliance with the Food Safety & Hygiene Standards will be awarded with an official star rating:
5 Stars ***** = Excellent
4 Stars **** = Very Good
3 Stars *** = Good
Restaurants which receive a rating of less than 3 stars will not be awarded a star rating. These premises will be required to undertake work to resolve issues and work with us to improve their compliance.
All restaurants within the Overberg District are inspected using the star rating system & are required to be in possession of a Certificate of Acceptability (COA). Participation in the scheme is voluntary and businesses can choose not to display their Food Safety & Hygiene Rating Certificate.
