MAJOR UPGRADE UNDERWAY AT KARWYDERSKRAAL REGIONAL LANDFILL FACILITY

The Overberg District Municipality is investing R63.5 million in the future of sustainable waste management through the construction of a new landfill cell, expansion of the composting area, and upgrading of the facility's access road.

The Overberg District Municipality has commenced a significant infrastructure project at the Karwyderskraal Regional Landfill Facility to strengthen the region's long-term waste management capacity and ensure continued compliance with environmental standards.

The project includes the construction of a new landfill disposal cell (Cell 5A), the expansion of the existing composting area, and the upgrading of the facility's access road. Together, these improvements will enhance operational efficiency, support sustainable waste management practices, and extend the lifespan of the regional landfill facility.

Cell 5A will provide approximately 550,000 cubic metres of additional airspace, ensuring the facility can continue serving the Overberg region for an estimated 7 to 8 years. The new cell will incorporate advanced environmental protection measures, including a high-performance liner system, leachate collection infrastructure, and improved stormwater management to minimise environmental impacts.

The composting area will also be expanded to accommodate future growth and improve the facility's capacity to manage organic waste. In addition, the existing access road will be upgraded to improve safety, durability, and operational access throughout the site.

Construction commenced on 23 February 2026 and is expected to be completed by 20 November 2026. The project represents an estimated investment of R63.5 million (including VAT) in essential municipal infrastructure.

The Overberg District Municipality remains committed to investing in sustainable infrastructure that protects the environment, supports service delivery, and ensures responsible waste management for the communities of the Overberg for years to come.
